Miscellaneous Items

In date order

03168-M0294CEEE- Three items- SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO, Chicago, Dec 1902 - Jan '03.  related to same transaction: 1) 2pp letter dated Dec 27, 1902 from Sears to customer in Eureka, Nevada, acknowledging an order, stating they could not ship c.o.d., assuring him of their appreciation, etc. (Beautiful head. Corner damp stained & small gap into scroll in graphics, gap torn from edge just touching one word of text, spindle file hole). 2) Order dated 1/10/03, filled out by Sears in longhand to same customer for two washers, 4 doz wringer rollers, one mangle, 2 doz mops, and another roller (wringer), in total amount of $23.59. (Nice head. Spindle file hole.) 3) Shipping receipt dated 1/10/03 from CM & ST RR to Sears for these same goods in three parcels. (Tattered edge, spindle file hole). Here's the rub: Although customer is same, the shipping receipt has address of Eureka, Nebraska rather than Nevada! The question: Were the first two pieces in error or the last? Whatever the case, the customer must have received the first letter, otherwise, he would not have known to send the money reflected on the order (he was 55˘ short, by the way, listed as "U.O.Us"). One might suspect that the transaction ultimately created a lot more correspondence. Let's analyze some more: The customer's name is obviously Scandinavian. Judging from his order, we can probably assume he was a storekeeper or was pooling orders for neighbors, a practice encouraged by Sears during this period. Would he more likely have been in Eureka, Nevada or Eureka, Nebraska? For some reason, I suspect Nebraska. I picture him more as a solid farmer than a mining speculator. Eureka, Neb was an unincorporated community about eight miles southwest of Hayes Center in Hayes County, a sparsely populated area (then and now!) in lower SW Nebraska. Another question: Did he ever get his goods?? I hope so! (Isn't this fun?!) Anyway, we've made photocopies of pages 767 and 768 from Sears' 1902 catalogue which picture & describe all these items he ordered. We'll include these copies with this selection. The washers are the Seroco Rotary No.15, & The Richmond Rotary, both manual machines, as is the mangle (smoothing) machine. Three items + photocopies. $35.00

06356-M1198EHOK- Certificate- SEARS, ROEBUCK & CO, Chicago, Ill., U.S.A. Delightful fifty cent certificate for the No.113 Catalogue. Dates from Fall 1903 or Spring 1904. Remarkably distinct cameo of Richard Sears with his signature in printed cursive. Printed in green and black ink with appearance of oversize paper currency. Two very small separations in edge where item was folded for mailing. Two folds hardly visible. Scarce item. 3-5/8" x 7-1/4". $54.00

06357-M1198EHOK- Postcard- SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO, Chicago, Illinois. ca 1906 to 1908. "Come and See Us When You Are in Chicago." Panoramic engraved view of "Our 40-Acre Plant, The World's Greatest Mercantile Institution." These new facilities were first occupied in 1906. Reverse has map and detailed instructions for getting to the Sears plant from various railroad stations. Map and plant engraving have a light apricot wash tint. Excellent condition except for small, light spot in lower margin and small fleck in typography of Roebuck name on reverse. An altogether delightful and valuable selection! 3-3/16"x 5-1/2". $28.00

03217-M0294AREE- Stereoscopic View Set- SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO. ca 1908. Stereoscopic View Set "Of The Great Plant Of Sears, Roebuck & Co." Sears put this together just after they moved into the new Homan Street plant. They devoted an entire page in 1908 catalogue to describing the set in great detail. Fifty views of all grounds, buildings, systems, equipment, departments, people coming and going and at work, etc. Each fully described on reverse. No.1 is of "Mr. R.W. Sears, President of Sears, Roebuck & Co., at his desk," with personal message over his signature on reverse. Views contained in a little black leatherette cardboard case, gilt imprinted, "A Trip Through Sears Roebuck & Co." Includes stereoscope of "good quality hardwood" w/engraved aluminum hood. They originally sold the view set for 35˘ or, with scope, 50˘. Some wear to case. View #40 appears newer and brighter and has probably been combined from another set. Else original and excellent. We'll include a photocopy of the descriptive page from the 1908 catalogue. $300.00
