Model Trains & Railroad Related

05661-M1196CSEE- 19th Century Woodcut- RAPID TRANSIT IN NEW YORK- SPEER'S ENDLESS RAILWAY TRAIN. Original center page spread from FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER, March 21, 1874. Wow! what a piece of art! Detailed panoramic perspective of this invention in city street scene w/the commerce of the city and social interaction in progress all around. Very large, fantastic engraving by Berghaus & Shimpf. It's impossible to adequately describe this piece-- you have to see it! Center spread measures 21" x 16-1/4" overall. Reverse of one sheet has three sketches and detailed description of Speer's invention in a total of 20-1/2 column inches. Briefly-- "This invention is described as an endless perpetually moving elevated train, or belt, of light platform cars, each eight feet wide and thirty or forty feet long, closely coupled, so as to form a continuous platform moving up one side of the street and down the other. One half of the floor of the train will be left uncovered, forming a sidewalk for the use of pedestrians... Proposed speed is ten or twelve miles an hour...." So far as we know this device was never built, but it is a marvelous exercise in design and contemplation. Paper is lightly foxed and reverse has a few obscure archival tissue repairs which do not show on front. Rare and deserving of prominent display. It's a real conversation piece! We have reproduced the material on reverse on off-white paper so that purchaser may work out a pleasing matting arrangement of both sides without doing violence to either. With this item we'll include the story of woodcut engraving originally published in the Illustrated London News, July 6, 1844. All as described. $118.00
